TWO junior co-pilots panicked as they battled to control an Air France jet as it plunged 38,000ft into the Atlantic Ocean, it was confirmed yesterday.
Investigators said the men were not trained for a high-altitude "stall" which caused the disaster - and the deaths of all 228 people on board.
The passengers, including five Brits, faced a terrifying 3½ minutes as the Airbus 330 flying from Brazil to Paris fell during a thunderstorm in 2009. Captain Marc Dubois, 58, had left the co-pilots in charge while he rested.
The emergency started when the jet suffered a loss of lift, or stall, and air speed sensors failed.
David Robert, 37, and Pierre-Cedric Bonin, 32, ignored normal procedure to lower the plane's nose and raised it instead.

Capt Dubois took more than a minute to respond to calls for help as Bonin, whose wife Isabella, 38, was on board, battled to control the jet. Robert then took over in the final minute before impact.
French investigators said: "The situation was salvageable." They recommended mandatory training for high-altitude stalls.
Air France, which faces manslaughter charges, rejected the accusations.
But unlike most people in their twenties, the singer didn't spend her sabbatical enjoying Amsterdam's "herbal" cafes or meeting Toadfish on the Neighbours set in Melbourne, Australia.

"He said doctors had told Amy to gradually reduce her intake of alcohol and to avoid bingeing at all costs. Amy told him she couldn't do that. It was all or nothing and she gave up completely.
"Mitch said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take."
The cause of Amy's death will not be known for weeks, when toxicology test results come through. But last night Sun Doctor Carol Cooper said the booze-quitting theory was feasible.
She added: "The heaviest drinkers have a particularly severe form of alcohol withdrawal called delirium tremens, or DTs.
"They may fall into a stupor and sleep it off, or lapse into a coma - or have dangerous seizures."
Amy's mum Janis, 56, and film director boyfriend Reg Traviss, 35, saw her the day before she died - and were sure she had not been drinking. Her doctor gave her a clean bill of health the same day.

Amy appeared coherent when she arrived at the iTunes festival, where her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield, 15, was the support act for The Wanted.
But an onlooker claimed she downed "gallons" of gin and Red Bull and "drank the bar dry".
The witness added: "Amy was behaving really erratically but that was nothing out of the ordinary for her."
Red Bull is an energy drink crammed with caffeine, a stimulant that can make the heart race.

A MAN has been eaten by a lion after being killed in a vicious attack near his home in Zambia.
Lantone Phiri was devoured by the man-eater as he was out walking in Nyimba, a remote town in the east of the southern African country.
A passer-by found the man's remains and alerted other members of their tribe.
The attack comes at a time of year when lions are known to prowl near human territory looking for new mates.
A source said: "This man was badly eaten by the lion. The issue is that this is the mating season for the lions so they move a lot."
Last month another local was rushed to Nyimba district hospital and stayed for weeks of treatment after being savaged by one of the aggressive cats.

A LITTLE boy stunned medics after being born with 34 fingers and toes.
One-year-old Akshat Saxena had seven fingers on each hand and ten toes on each foot — but no thumbs.
His condition is a genetic disorder known as polydactyl.
Akshat, from Uttar Pradesh, northern India, has since had surgery to remove the excess digits.
And doctors are trying to construct thumbs from the fingers they amputated.
Mum Amrita said: "I was so happy to see my baby as it was our first child. But later, when I saw his fingers, I was shocked and surprised."

A PRISON chef has been fired over an affair she had with an inmate.
Mum-of-two Wendy Snowdon landed in the soup after her common-law husband found her diary.
It contained entries about her passionate relationship with the lag at Ford Open prison, near Arundel, West Sussex.
Snowdon was employed by an outside college to run catering courses for cons and cooked meals for officers in their mess.
She was quizzed by prison bosses after her long-term partner discovered her diary at their home in nearby Lodsworth.

One source said: "He found out she had been having an affair when she asked him to leave the house, but presumed the relationship was with an officer. On the day of the local summer fete at Clymping Football Club, he went back to the house and found her diary. "Wendy's partner turned up at the fete and confronted her and the prisoner, who was there. There was quite a scene." Snowdon, who worked for The Manchester College on attachment to Ford, was barred from going into the jail after revelations about her affair emerged. She was later fired by the college.
A prison service spokesman said last night: "A member of outside education staff was excluded from the prison after allegations of inappropriate behaviour.
"This is a matter for The Manchester College."
A spokesperson for the college said: "We can confirm that the member of staff in question is no longer employed by the college."

A FORMER air stewardess has told how she lost her £50,000 life savings to a Nigerian scam that targets UK dating websites.
Divorcee Brenda Parke, 62, believed she was in a phone and email relationship with a blond 46-year-old Dutch widower called Bradford who claimed he was living in Birmingham with his 14-year-old daughter.
But he was really a conman in the Nigerian city of Lagos.
After a month, he claimed he and his daughter had been in a car crash while on a business trip to Africa. Brenda wired £9,000 for "hospital bills" then £40,000 for "flights" back to the UK, but she went to Birmingham airport and no one arrived.
She says: "My conscience would not let me leave a young girl in that situation so I sent the money."
Brenda reveals her cautionary tale on Channel 4 documentary 419: The Internet Romance Scam - named after the number for fraud in Nigeria's penal code.
Producers later flew to Lagos to interview reformed fraudster Felix Ekpa, who explains: "You put a picture on the website, an age, a profile, but nothing is real.
"When a woman emails, you get them to chat then throw in that you are having problems - been in hospital, a car crash (Felix laughs), an armed robbery, cancer... "
Desperate to believe "Bradford", Brenda, from West Sussex, had driven to the Birmingham address he had given. But a postman told her that no one of that name lived there.
She says: "I was now in a dreadful state - not eating, not sleeping, alone and scared. I felt overwhelmed by my own stupidity."
A second woman, known only as Caroline, tells the show, screened next Friday at 7.30pm, how she was duped by a man calling himself Sabastine who posed as a Greek-born Brit working in Nigeria. Furniture painter Caroline, 55, of Tunbridge Wells, Kent, says he later confessed hisTRUEidentity as a Nigerian called Steven - and insisted he was in LOVE with her.
Caroline, feeling vulnerable after the death of her mum, flew to South Africa to share a holiday with him.
She tells the show: "At the airport he had tears in his eyes and I did too. It was really exciting, like Christmas when you were a kid."
They rented a flat in South Africa for three months and she later flew home - before investing £30,000 in supposed oil deals in Africa which police believe never existed. Amazingly a relationship by phone still continues - as Caroline struggles to meet her bills. She admits: "Sad, isn't it, so late in life? It's insanity
